Decorating Your Apartment

Decorating your apartment, ways to spruce up those walls!

One of the biggest downfalls to apartment living is the limitations when trying to “make it your own”. Don’t let that deter you though, there are ways to spruce up those white walls and plain Jane windows!

Wall art is the obvious quick fix solution for bare walls, but there are so many more options for renters. Some landlords will allow you to paint with the understanding that upon moving out, you will repaint the unit back to its original color, which is typically all white. If you don’t want to be bothered with painting prior to leaving, have no fear, there are several other options for you! Contact paper, sounds funny but can really be eye catching and beautiful. This is what is used for lining cabinets and drawers, but it is self stick and easy to remove, who says you cannot use it on walls? There are some great examples of beautiful prints at Contact Paper Designs that can be custom ordered and measured to fit any space.

If you are unable to choose a design of contact paper that you like, you might find fabric to be a better option? There are hundreds and hundreds of options for fabric choices and who says they are only meant to be pillows, blankets, and clothing? Fabric on walls not only adds color, but texture. It can applied with adhesive on the edges leaving minimal damage to repair before you move out, or it can even be stapled! I love the look of this, its a small space, just an accent wall in a little nook but when you’re living in a small space, this can make a huge difference!

Wallpaper is still always a great option when decorating your apartment, but not the messy stuff that requires water then it gets really sticky, it is hard to apply to the walls, it gets wrinkles and is just a total mess. There are temporary options for wallpaper. Peel and stick wallpaper is all the new craze! Peel and stick can be used for not only walls, but also dressers, inside drawers, and on lampshades! Can you even believe this is a low cost, peel and stick wallpaper?

Don’t let living in a rental keep you from spicing up your space! Decorating an apartment doesn’t have to be a chore! Stay tuned for storage tips for small space living in our next blog!

School Essentials When Headed to College

Headed back to school? Freshman in college, afraid you won’t have everything you need? Have no fear, this list of college must haves will help you out!

A place to call home for 9 months! Seems obvious, I know, but don’t wait until the last minute or you might be scrambling!

Supplies, another obvious one, but do you know what you REALLY need?

1. Text Books. Buy them, even if everyone says you don’t need them. No two students study the same!

2.Writing Utensils. College students still use pencils, contrary to what you might have heard, and don’t forget lead and extra erasers. Pens and highlighters, also essentials. Be sure to stick with

blue or black ink, as most professors will have that preference.

3. Three Ring Binders. These are a must have for organization. Put notebook paper in each one and be sure to have back up for refills.

4. Index Cards. The number one essential for studying.

5. Planner or Personal Organizer. Once school starts, you’ll have classes to worry about, sporting events, campus events, social club happenings! You’ll love having a planner, they are a life saver.

6. Graphing Calculator. Spend the extra money and buy yourself a nice graphing calculator. You will not regret it. As long as it doesn’t get lost, you can use it for four years of school.

7. Laptop Computer. Aside from text books, a laptop is probably going to be your most costly investment. However, you won’t regret having it. It is always nice to be able to type papers and do

research from home. Don’t forget the printer, extra cartridge and paper!

Dorm Room Essentials. This is probably ever college student’s favorite thing about school, living away from home. Most have never done it until they move away for school, so do you know what you really need?

1. Bed Risers. I put these first because they are a storage must have! Most dorm rooms are small, any extra useable space is always beneficial. Bed risers allow you to utilize the wasted floor space             underneath your bed.  Bed Risers

2. Bed Sheets. Most dorm room beds are a twin EXTRA LONG. Be sure to purchase twin extra long sheets as well as mattress pad cover and blankets or comforter. Twin XL Bedding Essentials

3. Pillows. It’s always nice to have an extra pillow, so be sure to buy at least 2.

4. Towels. Most dorms have communal bathrooms and your towels aren’t included, buy a few sets so you’re not constantly worrying about washing them.

6. Shower Caddy. Again, with communal bathrooms, your toiletries cannot stay in there. An easy way to keep your things together and transport to and from the bathroom, is with a plastic caddy.

7. Shower Shoes. Sounds silly, I know. You will get used to wearing non slip flip flops in the shower, just think how many others are using the same shower, then you wont mind it so much!

8. Dorm Room Storage. Whether it be plastic storage bins or additional drawers and shelves, you’re probably going to need more than what is provided.

9. Cooling Fan. Unfortunately most dorms will not have central air. A fan for your comfort in will be nice to have when it’s warm.

10. Extension Cord. Extra power sources are always nice to have, you will have lots of stuff that need power and so will your roommate.

This should give you a jump start on your college shopping and make for an easy transition into life away from home. If you’re a future California University of PA student and a “last minute” kind of person and you haven’t found a place to call home yet, consider Best University Properties! Best University Properties

Not Just a College Town

Contrary to popular belief, California is not just a college town.

  • Founded in 1849, named after the state of California because the town’s founding coincided with the California Gold Rush of 1849
  • California University of Pennsylvania founded soon after in 1852
  • First home built in California was in the summer of 1849, occupied by Thomas W. Moore still stands next to the US Post office in town
  • First child born to the new town was, Thomas’ son, Job Johnson Moore
  • In 1856, the first newspaper, “The Valley Spirit,” was published, which was still in existence in 1866 but was discontinued shortly after that year. At present “The Sentinel” is a weekly newspaper published in the town.
  • In the first years, the leading industry was boat building. In 1879 the ship yard was demolished to make room for the railroad, which still runs through California today.
  • The First Methodist Episcopal is the oldest church in the town and the church erected at that time is still in use, although it has been remodeled several times.
  • Arlington Hotel was the only hotel ever to operate in California. It still stands today at the corner of Union and Second Street.

California, a historic town, nestled on the Monongahela River in Washington County, is far more than just a college town. Just an hour south of Pittsburgh, a day trip worth taking. Pack a lunch to enjoy on the riverside at the picnic tables. Visit the historic library which is housed in the original train station with a train car still nestled on its lawn!

So what is there to do in California today?

  • Fisherman at heart? Love the water? Back the boat trailer up to the launch and enjoy a day on the river. Why fight boat traffic in heavily populated areas when there is an easily accessible boat launch  in the heart of a small town.
  • Locals love to grab a bite at the one and only Campy’s Pizza. If you’re looking for Papa John’s or Pizza Hut, you’re out of luck, we don’t have large corporate eateries here unless you want Subway or a Dairy Queen!
  • Throw a penny on the railroad tracks, the train is bound to come, several times while you’re here for the day
  • Visitors can take a stroll through the beautiful campus of California University
  • Guests can enjoy 5 home football games at California University in 2018 9/22  9/29  10/13  10/27  11/10

Off Campus or On Campus

Student Housing Options

  • Residence halls
  1. Residence halls place you in the middle of what you hope to be a vibrant campus! Living on campus often translates into “easy living” considering everything you will need is easily accessible and in most cases you are only responsible for keeping your own personal space cleaned and well kept.
  2. Social aspects of campus living can be nice, the students who live on campus become much like their own little community, there is always someone to hang out with or talk to and there is always something going on.
  3. However, on campus housing isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be! So you’re 18 now and finally left Mom and Dad’s, but guess what? You still have resident advisors looking over you, you still have rules to follow, and you still have a curfew! Did you really move away from home?
  4. Privacy is VERY limited in most campus housing situations, bathrooms are often communal, dining halls are just that, a HALL FILLED WITH PEOPLE! If you’re living in a dorm or on campus housing that doesn’t provide you with the ability to cook your own meals, you might find yourself stuck eating meals that you aren’t crazy about or simply living on Ramen Noodles and chicken tenders!
  5. Did I mention the cost of on campus housing? Most parents and students don’t pay much attention to this because it’s “included in tuition” but its really not cost affective. You can live off campus and use financial aid to pay rent for often times much less

  • Off campus housing
  1. Truly a “living on your own” experience!
  2. Best University Properties offers housing options for students in our 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments or town homes.
  3. Our property is within walking distance to California University of Pennsylvania so really you aren’t missing out on any on campus happenings.
  4. Our homes offer you full equipped kitchens to cook up all your favorites! Let’s be honest, home cooked meals are going to be something you miss when you’re away at school, at least you can cook up a nice hot meal and invite over some friends for a study hour and a game night if you’re living in your own little home!
  5. PRIVACY……it actually exists when you live off campus! Each individual bedroom in most of our housing options comes with its own key, so even if you’re sharing the kitchen and living space and bathrooms, you still have your own sanctuary of a bedroom, without a roommate if desired, to escape when need be!
  6. Campus is noisy! I don’t know about you but I can’t focus on reading and studying if there is a bunch of noise surrounding me. Off campus housing is much quieter! We want all of our young scholars to succeed so we encourage lots of studying!
  7. When you live off campus you’re allotted much more freedom. You don’t have any rules to abide by. You don’t have a curfew. There are no resident aids patrolling your hallways watching over you! It is a much more relaxing atmosphere.
  8. Did I mention cost? We offer housing options for as little as $450/month per person, when you share a 2 bedroom apartment with a friend. Have more than one roommate in mind? Three students can share a beautiful townhouse for only $366/month per person!
  9. Why would you not want to try off campus housing in our newly renovated homes that have gorgeous kitchens, in home laundry, wall mounted flat screen television, keyless entry for added security and so much more!!
